Indian Aviation in the Last 5 Years: The Growth That Changed Everything

The last five years have completely transformed Indian aviation.

In 2020, aircraft were grounded, airports were empty, and airlines were struggling to survive because of COVID-19. But today, India has become one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world.

For student pilots, this growth is not just industry news, it directly affects future jobs, airline hiring, training opportunities, aircraft demand, and the future of flying in India.

In 2020, the aviation industry faced its biggest crisis in history.

Flights were suspended during lockdowns, airlines suffered huge losses, and passenger traffic collapsed worldwide.

India’s aviation sector saw an enormous drop in passenger numbers compared to pre-COVID years.

But what makes India’s story different is how strongly the industry recovered after the pandemic.

India’s domestic aviation numbers show one of the strongest recoveries globally.

According to DGCA and Ministry of Civil Aviation data:

In 2023 alone, domestic air traffic grew by nearly 23% compared to the previous year.  Then in 2024, India crossed 161 million domestic passengers, growing another 6.12% year-on-year.The Ministry of Civil Aviation also stated that domestic passenger traffic crossed 22 crore passengers in 2024, showing how rapidly Indians are choosing air travel today.  This means India is not just recovering it is growing beyond pre pandemic levels.

And the reason behind this growth is simple:

• More affordable flying

• Growing middle class

• Expansion of low-cost airlines

• Better airport connectivity

• Increased travel demand after COVID

• Digital transformation and passenger convenience

One of the biggest aviation changes in India has been airport expansion.

In 2014, India had around 74 operational airports to 159 operational airports by 2025, that number reached nearly more than double in just a decade. 

This expansion became much faster in the last five years because of:

• UDAN regional connectivity scheme

• Growth of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities

• Rising passenger demand

Today, airports are expanding in:

• Noida (Jewar)

• Navi Mumbai

• Goa (Mopa)

• Smaller regional cities

Earlier, pilots mainly operated metro-city routes.

Indian airlines have placed some of the largest aircraft orders in aviation history.

Experts estimate India may require over 2,200 aircraft by 2042 to meet future demand.

India is now officially the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world. 

That is a massive achievement.

A few years ago, many people saw aviation as a luxury in India.

Today:

• Students fly for exams

• Families fly for vacations

• Professionals fly for work

• Small cities are connected by air

Flying is becoming part of normal life in India.

But the Challenges...

Despite the growth, aviation also faced major challenges Flight delays, Airport congestion, Pilot shortages, Rising ticket prices & Aircraft delivery delays worldwide.

In fact, India’s aviation minister recently discussed concerns regarding rising airfares due to aircraft supply issues and increasing demand. 

This teaches an important lesson:

Aviation is growing rapidly but the industry also needs better infrastructure and more trained professionals.

India's Future according to Experts

Experts believe Indian aviation is still only at the beginning of its growth story.

Industry forecasts suggest:

• Passenger traffic may reach 300–400 million annually by 2030

• Regional aviation will expand heavily

• International flying by Indian carriers will increase rapidly

• Pilot demand will continue rising strongly 

Delhi Airport has already become one of the busiest airports in the world, ranking among the global top 10 airports by passenger traffic. 

That shows how quickly India’s aviation ecosystem is growing globally.

Indian aviation is entering one of the biggest growth phases in its history.

But this industry will not only need more pilots it will need better-trained pilots.

Because the next decade of Indian aviation may create opportunities India has never seen before.
